I am so amazed at the things people lie about! Everything from telling someone they look nice, when we know they look a mess; to making a promise we have no intention of keeping, to keep from hurting someone's feelings or to just try to make them feel better. Some even lie about helping others in some way, to make themselves appear to be helpful or to just 'look better.' And some lie because they truly don't have anything 'worthy' to say!
People lie about their names and ages for various reasons, they lie on their taxes, they lie to their mates, they even lie on other people! Some are habitual liars and will literally lie about anything!
~Some people even feel justified about lying, because they truly mean well! Doing the wrong thing for the 'right' reason, is still wrong! A wrong plus a 'right' does NOT equal a RIGHT! Lying is an abomination to God! Note in the above scriptures, there is never any lying escape clauses! It doesn't say lying is an abomination to the Lord, UNLESS you're lying for a 'good' reason...Yes lying, even for 'good' reasons is still lying.~
So what do we do when someone asks us something and we know that being honest will hurt them? I believe we need to take that risk! Pray for the Lord to prepare their hearts for what you have to say and to show them your own heart, and SPEAK THE TRUTH IN LOVE! (Ephesians 4:15) OR if there is a way to NOT say anything at all, then DON'T!
And what about when the shoe is on the other foot and someone is honest with you about something that may be difficult for you to hear? You should listen to what they have to say, and if you know that what they are saying is true; receive it and ask the Lord to work in you, if what you're hearing isn't something you can easily change on your own. But if you aren't so sure if they are right, you should pray and ask the Lord to show you the truth. He's not ever going to reveal something to someone else about you, without informing you as well!
And if you know for a fact that they are wrong, because it goes against what God has said, reject it and keep on moving! Not everything people say to you is the truth! Many offer their personal opinions, and just because they feel the way they do, doesn't make it right! Even well meaning Christians people can tell you something that sounds good, but be dead wrong! Why do you think Jesus had to rebuke Peter? (Mark 8:31-33) And just because someone may have a title in front of their name, doesn't mean they know it all, or know anything at all! Know what God says for yourself! (2 Timothy 2:15)
The moral of this devotional is: BE HONEST EVEN WHEN IT HURTS because in the end, people may not like what you have to say, they may not even like you; but they will respect you and be able to trust you. We have to worry less about offending people, and more about offending God! STOP LYING!
Prayer:
Father, please enable us to always speak the truth in love to one another, even when it's difficult to do so! Give us the right words to say, when words are needed, and give us the wisdom to know when to be quiet! Open our hearts Lord, to be able to receive the truth when we need to hear it ourselves. Oh Lord, it's not easy, but with You all things are possible! Forgive us Father, for every time we lied and continue working in us until we are changed into the image of Your Son! In Jesus' Name, we pray. Amen!
